One
day, while sitting on the floor and sharing devotions prior to
rehearsal, the band decided we should agree in prayer to ask the Lord to
help us write our own songs. We did pray, He did help and within four
days I penned my first song, "He'll Be There." The song was so
fitting for our ministry because it conveyed God's faithfulness and the
fact that He is no respector of persons. It was also written to declare
the message that we will all need Him at some point in our lives. It was
a song we could sing that was quite true to our experience.
During our years together as a band we probably performed the song "My Treasure" as much as any other. The rhythm and lyrics lent themselves to almost any setting and we really enjoyed playing it as the words came from the heart. I wrote "My Treasure" from my personal relationship with God. In those days I had a strong desire to be used by God and often found myself praying the words to this song though they had not yet been put to music. Many devoted Christians requested we sing this song in our concerts as it seemed to connect with the spiritual man. The song seemed to command the attention of those on college campuses, parks and other outdoor settings more than any other song in our repertoire. The song, "Here We Are Lord" was written to be used as the second or third song in concerts. It's purpose was to invite the Lord's presence into the setting while telling something of our past and present and speaking prophetically of the future. We often changed the lyrics from "a little bitty town like this" to "a little church like this" in an effort to make the song more personal for the audience we were ministering to at the moment. I wrote "It's Only The Beginning" from the prophesy of Joel 2:28 where God promises to pour out His spirit on all flesh so that the "sons and daughters" would prophesy. In the 1970's we were privileged to be part of the Jesus Movement. During that time God's grace enabled us to discover and experience new measures of truth, freedom and faith to better walk in the gifts of His spirit. "It's Only the Beginning" was written to declare that what we were experiencing was prophesied long ago and was but a small portion of what was in the heart of God for His church and the individual believer." |
