International Agape Ministries, Inc. began in 1968-69 at a Community church where Ron Turner was serving as youth pastor. He met with a few long-haired, bearded folks, led them to Christ and invited them to Church. They came and brought their bare footed, "hippie" type friends with them. Young people, hungry for God, offended the established church by their appearance. They offended them so much they fired Ron without notice.

As a result of these rejections a small Bible study was started at Azusa Pacific College. At about the same time the need for a new church in Covina Park became apparent when two, young Christians in the area attempted to attend services at one of the more conventional churches. Not only were they refused admittance because of their long hair and clothing they were also physically thrown from the property while attempting to identify themselves as fellow Christians.

If you couldn't find a church to accept you and your heart longed to please God, you were welcome. Soon a Christian rock band started sharing the gospel through music. Changed lives were the result. The band chose the name "AGAPE" meaning "God's love" in Greek and this eventually become the name of the entire ministry.

Ron Turner is a graduate of Azusa Pacific College and attended Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. He has received his Master's degree in Biblical Literature with emphasis on New Testament Theology.
